God Ganesha - Vakratunda

Ganesha’s First manifestation is of Vakratunda that literally means Ganesha with twisted trunk.

As we already discussed that Ganesha had eight manifestations (avatars) and the Vakratuda was his first avatar.

The Avtar of the Ganesha in the form of Vakratunda is depicted as the Brahmin elephant god is riding a lion. He takes this avatar to slay the demon Matsara that literally means rivalry. This avatar guides us that we all must avoid rivalry with our fellow beings and maintain the harmony among ourselves. Vakratunda gives us protection and bless us with success in all our good causes.

The story behind the birth of Vakratunda

Once there was a demon named "Matsara" was born out of the nonsense thoughts of Indra, the king of Gods.

Demon Matsara performed severe penance to seek the blessings of Shiva and obtained the boon of fearlessness from Him. By obtaining the boon from Shiva, he became so powerful that he went on conquering all the three worlds. He became the king of Gods and taken the place with the help of the guidance given by most eminent  Demon’s teacher Sukracharya.

The defeated Gods ran to Kailasha and there they found Shiva in a deep meditation. They prayed to him  for the protection. On hearing the mission of Gods, Demon Matsara went to Kailasha and he started fighting with Shiva.

At that time, Gods were very upset and afraid. They were puzzled and don’t know what to do next. Fortunately Dattatreya came there. He advised the Gods to invoke the grace of Vakratunda.
