Ganesha manifested in his third form famous as Mahodara to slay the
demon Mohasura. The demon Mohasura literally means hallucination and
uncertainty.
There is interesting yet little confusing story behind the manifestation of Mahodara. Once Shiva was in deep meditation for a long time. In the meantime, there was the powerful demon Mohasura. He had prayed Sun and then got the boon from him that he would be regarded as the king of demons. He was overjoyed and started conquering kingdoms and ultimately able to conquer all the three planes of existence.
All Gods were worried and they went to the Sun to seek help. Sun advised all of them to worship Mahodara. After seeking Sun’s advice they started worshiping Mahodara with full devotion.
Mahodara was pleased and granted them with a boon, saying that he would banish Mohasura. Demon’s teacher and priest Shukracharya came to know about this incident in his meditative state. He advised Mohasura to surrender in front of Mahodara.Vishnu also advised Mahasura that if he surrendered in front of Mahodara,he would not be killed or destroyed.
