Hello friends! You all know that India is the land of various Hindu festivals, where we celebrate different auspicious festivals each day in distinguish Indian states. Today, we are here with new and amazing Hindu festival called 'Bahula Chauth' or 'Bol Chauth'. This festival is celebrated to give respect and honor to the cattle, considering an important role for farmers. The festival is enjoyed and celebrated in the holy month 'Shravana' according to Hindu calendar. This Hindu festival Bahula Chauth is also known by the name of 'Bol Chauth'. The occasion is celebrated by the farming community in the states Gujarat mainly. The festival, 'Bahula Chauth' or 'Bol Chauth' has a religious enthusiasm and observed just a day before the Nag Panchami festival.

Festive Activity During Bahula Chauth

The Bahula Chauth festival is a poise occasion for the devotees of Lord Krishna. They ensure that celebrations are carried out in its true spirit. Portraits of Lord Krishna signifying his love for the cattle are displayed and worshiped by the farming community in Gujarat. The farming community arises early in the morning on Bahula Chaouth in whole Gujarat. All the farmers ensure that all the cattle should be cleaned for the occasion. The sheds and the cattle are cleaned thoroughly on this auspicious occasion. A recipe is prepared from rice and offered to the cattle. During offering this recipe to cattle farmers pray for the well being of their cattle on the occasion of Bahula Chauth.

Rituals of Bahula Chauth

The farming community consumes the recipe prepared from millets on this occasion. A special fact about Bahula Chauth is that families usually cook under the open sky on this day. To drink the milk on this occasion is prohibited on Bahula Chauth. Any preparation made from various milk products are also not taken on this festival day.

Special prayer sessions are arranged in the evening during Bahula Chauth and villagers attend these sessions in which the village priest enthralls the gathering with various ritualistic tales associated with Bahula Chauth. 

Legends Of Bahula Chauth

Hindu Scriptures describe various stories associated with Bahula Chauth. According to one such legend, a cow named as Bahula was on the way home to feed her calf. The cow saw a lion on her way who wanted to eat her. The cow said to the lion that she was on her way home to feed her hungry calf. She promised to lion to return back after feeding the calf.


The lion agreed and as she promised, she came back to the lion after feeding her calf. The Lion was so moved by the commitment of the cow for her calf that he decided to let her go to her calf. The festivities are also celebrated as a mark of respect for the cows that show not only for their calf but also for the farming community whose livelihood depends on their cattle.

Women in some parts of Gujarat state keep fast on this occasion to seek the blessings of the Lord. The festival is being celebrated from ancient days and changing times have only led to the festivities being celebrated with religious strength and zeal.
