Shravan Putrada Ekadashi has great importance for any childless couple. This Vrat usually falls on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha (Dark fortnight) in the Shravan month of the Hindu lunar calendar. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Legends
Bhavishya Purana describes about the legends associated to Shravan Putrada Ekadashi. The legendary figure was narrated by Krishna to Yudhishthira.
A powerful king whose name was Mahijit ruled on the kingdom of Mahishmati. Despite all his wealths, and properties, the King was depressed all the time. He was childless and therefore asked for the advice of priests and other nobleman of the region. Even after, no results found and the King continued to remain worried.
Seeing his disturbances, the nobleman of his kingdom gave advice to meet a saint whose name was Lomesh and he was a learned man. The saint Lomesh found the reason for the King's present situation laid in his previous birth using his meditation knowledge.
Saint Lomesh pointed out that in his previous birth the King was very cunning merchant who worried only about his riches. Once during his a journey, the merchant felt thirsty and reached across a pond.
He saw that a cow was drinking water from the pond with her calf. The merchant pulled away the cow with the intensity of his thirst and drank the water instead. Due to that reason, the King being childless in his present birth. The saint advised the king to keep the fast on the day of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi with his queen. The King followed all the instructions given by saint and blessed with a son soon thereafter.
Importance of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi Vrat In Hindu Religion
The birth of son is considered very auspicious in Hinduism and the devotees who observe Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fasting with great devotion are blessed with baby boy. The observing Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fast in honor of Lord Vishnu is considered to be very auspicious and kept for 24 hours on this day.
Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fasting can be done in two consecutive days. The devotees with a family life should observe the fast on actual Shravan Putrada Ekadashi day. While the devotees who are Sanyasi, Widows and those desirous of getting Moksha need to observe the fast for two days, both a day before and on Shravan Putrada Ekadashi.
On the day of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi, devotees should feed Brahmins and offer the clothes to poor people. Lord Vishnu gives special blessings to such devotees and keep fasting with true devotion. In Eastern and Southern India, Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fast is observed with religious traditions and customs while in North Indian states, devotees observe the other version of Ekadashi known as Pausha Putrada Ekadashi.
