Vasant Panchami  - The beginning of auspicious period

Vasant Panchami marks the onset of the spring season on the fifth day of the waning phase of the moon in the Hindu month (Magha) that falls in the month (Feburary –March). In 2015, Basat Pansami will fall on 24th January and auspicious time to pray to Goddess Saraswati on Basant Panchami is 09:23:37 to 11:30:03.

Vasant Panchami is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. She is depicted as the deity with the four hands and holding a plucked stringed instrument called Veena in her two hands and seated on a white lotus  with four hands and wearing a pure silk white sari along with a peacock, that signifies that wisdom suppresses ego. Four hands of the deity symbolize the different sides of human personality in learning. Goddess Saraswati is considered as the deity of spiritual knowledge, science, arts and  music.

Vasant Panchami is considered as an auspicious occasion for students to start their studies, marking the new beginning of their learning period. Schools and colleges organize special prayers to worship goddess Saraswati. Many students place their books at the Goddess Saraswati feet and seek her blessing for better learning.


Vasant Panchami is also called the festival of harvest as it symbolizes blossoming flowers of mustard. Thus Yellow color has a great significance in the celebration of Vasant Panchami. Many followers of Goddess Saraswati adorn the idol of goddess with yellow sari. Goddess sarawati’s devotees wear yellow attires on this day. Moreover the sweets and dishes prepared for the festival are usually yellow and saffron in color.
