The 11th Sikh Guru’s name was Arjan Dev, born in Goindval, Panjab, India. He was the youngest son of Guru Ram Das Sahib Ji and Bibi Sahini Ji. Bibi Sahini Ji was the daughter of Guru Amar Das. After the death of his father Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan Dev became the fifth Guru of Sikhs on September 1st, 1581.

He was the first Sikh Guru to be put into effect. The most vital work done by Guru Arjan Dev is the compilation of the Adi Granth. He gathered all the deeds of previous four Gurus and had written them down in the form of stanzas in 1604. He added the teachings of Hindus and Muslim sages in that compilation. In the year of 1606, Guru Arjan Dev was punished by the Mughal emperor Jahangir because of inhibiting to remove the teachings of the Muslim sages from the compilation and persecuted the Guru, which was caused by his death. Since 1606, the day of 16th June each year is observed as his martyrdom by the Sikh people.

Before his death, Guru Arjan Dev departed the light to his son Guru Har Gobind who became the next Guru. Amritsar city was constructed by the Guru. He also founded other cities such as Taran and Kartarpur.

Guru Arjan Dev created a system known as Masand, where a set of delegates taught and spread the thoughts and teachings of sages and in return, they received a portion of Sikh's income called Dasyand, which can be treated as monetary values, goods and services to people. These are paid by the Sikh community to support the building of Gurudwaras, Guru Langar, which is known as communal kitchens.

The intension of Lungar is to spread love, respect and equality. The Langars are open for each and every visitor in Gurudwaras, which represents the castles society and equality for all human beings. The land of Amritsar was gifted by the Mughal Emperor named as Akbar. He was so impressed by seeing the sharing food by sitting on the floor like an ordinary man in the Guru Langars.

Guru Arjan Dev was a legendary person among his followers. He enthusiastically taught and spread the messages of Guru Nanak.
