Today, we are here with new and amazing Hindu festival called 'Bahula Chauth' or 'Bol Chauth'. This festival is celebrated to give respect and honor to the cattle, considering an important role for farmers. The festival is enjoyed and celebrated in the holy month 'Shravana' according to Hindu calendar. This Hindu festival Bahula Chauth is also known by the name of 'Bol Chauth'. The occasion is celebrated by the farming community in the states Gujarat mainly. The festival, 'Bahula Chauth' or 'Bol Chauth' has a religious enthusiasm and observed just a day before the Nag Panchami festival.

Festive Activity During Bahula Chauth

The Bahula Chauth festival is a poise occasion for the devotees of Lord Krishna. They ensure that celebrations are carried out in its true spirit. Portraits of Lord Krishna signifying his love for the cattle are displayed and worshiped by the farming community in Gujarat. The farming community arises early in the morning on Bahula Chaouth in whole Gujarat. All the farmers ensure that all the cattle should be cleaned for the occasion. The sheds and the cattle are cleaned thoroughly on this auspicious occasion. A recipe is prepared from rice and offered to the cattle. During offering this recipe to cattle farmers pray for the well being of their cattle on the occasion of Bahula Chauth.

Rituals of Bahula Chauth

The farming community consumes the recipe prepared from millets on this occasion. A special fact about Bahula Chauth is that families usually cook under the open sky on this day. To drink the milk on this occasion is prohibited on Bahula Chauth. Any preparation made from various milk products are also not taken on this festival day.

Special prayer sessions are arranged in the evening during Bahula Chauth and villagers attend these sessions in which the village priest enthralls the gathering with various ritualistic tales associated with Bahula Chauth. 

Legends Of Bahula Chauth

Hindu Scriptures describe various stories associated with Bahula Chauth. According to one such legend, a cow named as Bahula was on the way home to feed her calf. The cow saw a lion on her way who wanted to eat her. The cow said to the lion that she was on her way home to feed her hungry calf. She promised to lion to return back after feeding the calf.

The lion agreed and as she promised, she came back to the lion after feeding her calf. The Lion was so moved by the commitment of the cow for her calf that he decided to let her go to her calf. The festivities are also celebrated as a mark of respect for the cows that show not only for their calf but also for the farming community whose livelihood depends on their cattle.

Women in some parts of Gujarat state keep fast on this occasion to seek the blessings of the Lord. The festival is being celebrated from ancient days and changing times have only led to the festivities being celebrated with religious strength and zeal.

Luv Kush Jayanti 2016, Luv & Kush Birth Day

 Luv Kush Jayanti 2016 = 18th August (Thursday)

Each year, Luv Kush Jayanti is observed on the day of Shravan Purnima in Northern India. Limitedly this festival is celebrated by some specific community of North India. Maximum it is celebrated and enjoyed in Indore and Chandigarh. There are Koiri Samaj and Kushwah Samaj, two most prominent communities among them.

Luv and Kush were twin sons of Rama and Sita and their story appears in Ramayana. The Jayanti is celebrated in the Ashram of saint Valmiki to commemorate their day of birth.

Legend & History

Though, both Luv and Kush knew the story of Lord Ram and Sita, they both were unaware that they were the sons of Rama in fact. They were also unaware of the true identity of their mother and the fact that she was abdicated by her husband because the people of Ayodhya had raised questions about her purity after being kidnaped by Ravana.

Once, when Rama had organized the Ashwamedha Yagya, the twins caught the horse when it was loitering around the Ashram. When the great warriors of Ayodhya learned about this, they reached at Ashram and claimed for the horse but the twin brothers refused to return. As a result, a battle ensued between the warriors and the twin brothers in which the brothers of Rama, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna were defeated.

On hearing this, Lord Rama was forced to take part in the battle himself. He was impressed by the strength and bravery of Luv and Kush and invited them to his palace. There, they learned their true identity and also asked his wife Sita to return to the palace. On reaching Ayodhya she once again pleaded her innocence and asked Mother Earth to usurp her into her fold. The earth obliged and swallowed her inside herself. The anguished Lord Rama took Samadhi in the Sarayu river to meet Sita in heaven. After taking Samadhi by Rama, the clan of Ayodhya was handed down by the twin brothers Luv and Kush.

Another story is that Sita gave birth to Luv shortly after she started living in the Ashram of Valmiki. One day she went to the forest to collect wood and left her only son Luv under the care of saint Valmiki. Soon after some time, the saint got busy with his doings and the little one crawled into the forest. When the saint realized that the baby was missing, he was exasperated. He did not have the heart to tell Sita that she had lost her only child. Therefore, he created another child Kush look like Luv from Kusha grass.

When Sita returned, the saint Valmiki was surprised to see a little Luv in her arms. In turn, Sita was surprised to see the identical twin. Since, he was made of Kusha grass, he was named as Kush and continued to live at the Ashram with Valmiki, Sita and her two twin sons Luv and Kush.

These are the two most vital legends associated with stories of Luv and Kush. These two stories are described on the Luv Kush Jayanti in most of the places to celebrate the birth and the bravery of the young lads who serve as an inspiration for the youth.

Significance

Even though, this festival is celebrated on a small scale among some selective communities, the sentiments and the importance attached to it marks its significancs. It is not an ode to the Lord Rama and his family. It is a moment of reunion and celebration of the family values.

Special Slams are placed on inculcating the virtues of respect for parents, service to society, brotherhood and bravery in times of test to the children. The birth of twins is regarded as an auspicious occasion as it is believed Luv & Kush have taken birth again.

Celebrations and Rituals

People wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath. They worship of Lord Vishnu because Lord Rama is an incarnation of Vishnu, read shlokas from the Ramayna and sing the Bhajans and Kirtans in the praise of the Lord.

In spite of offering prayers to Lord Rama, Maata Sita and Luv Kush, children dressed up as Luv & Kush on this auspicious day and important scenes from the Ramayna are performed. Various cultural programs are organized on this day.

Some people organize the event to read Ramayna for over 24 hours. Thus, Luv Kush Jayanti is celebrated on small scale but forms an important event in the Hindu calendar and is a significant occasion for some communities.

Indian Hindu Fast Narsimha Simha Sankranti 2016

As we know that India is a land, where we see that the people of different religion celebrate various festivals according to their rituals and traditional customs. Simha Sankranti is one of them. The festival Simha Sankranti falls on the day when the Sun moves from Kark Rashi (Cancer) to Simha (Leo). Simha Sankrati is symbolized as the beginning of Malayalam Calendar in Kerala. Similarly, Avni Masam starts in the Tamil Month on this day of Simha Sankranti.

Simha Sankranti 2016 Punya Kaal Muhurat will be from 11:27 to 17:54.

Celebrations of Simha Sankranti

Simha Sankranti day is only for worship. The devotees offer their prayers to the Sun God, Lord Vishnu and Lord Narsimha on this auspicious day. The Vishnumurthy Temple situated at Kulai near the city of Mangalore is specially decorated for the festivities.

A holy bath named as Narikela Abhishekha is specially performed on the occasion of Simha Sankranti. Purely cleaned Nariyal Pani is used in Narikela Abhishekha. Appada Puja is performed to please Lord Ganesha and the Prasadam is offered to Lord Vishnumurthy in the form of Hoovina Puja on this occasion. The celebrations continue till Kanya Sankraman.

The festival is celebrated in the temples of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Religious Importance of Simha Sankranti

Although, the Hindu festival Simha Sankranti is celebrated throughout the southern states of India. In spite of this, it is also celebrated in the Kumaun belt of Uttarakhand. It is usually believed that during the reign of the Chand dynasty, artisans displayed their products in the palace on Simha Sankranti. They were rewarded by the king for their efforts. Common people of the clan too became a part of these celebrations and offer fruits and flowers to the members of the royal family. This offering things to the Royal family was known by the name of "Rite of Olag".

This tradition of offering gifts on occasion of Simha Sankranti is much similar to the traditions of Christmas. On this auspicious day, Bread made from horse bean poured with butter and ghee was consumed throughout the Kumaun region. Due to this widespread use of ghee on this occasion is named as Ghrit Sankranti in Bhageshwar district of Kumaun in Uttarakhand.

Sankranti in general shows the movement of the Sun from one Rashi to another. Simaha Sankranti is unique as able to expel our darkness from the life on this occasion and start an era of prosperity.
