Divine Relationship of Hanumana and Rama

Hanumana is revered as best, eccentric and unsurpassable devotee. Many Hindu epics have mentioned there that if the person possesses at least one quality of Hanuman, he will be considered as extraordinary. One such quality is total surrender. Surrender due to fear or selfishness can give temporarily positive results but later give negative results. For success, one has to fearlessly surrender. This will give peace and strength to the person who is going to surrender. Devotion, selflessness is the necessary step for surrender. As a result, Lossless Wisdom, selflessness, strength and vigor can be achieved.

Legends behind the celebration of Navratri

Once there was a demon named Mahishasura and he got the boon from Lord Brahma indicating that no man would be able to kill him. He began empowering Gods and finally he overturned the throne of God Indra. At that time, all Gods went to the Hindu trinity Gods: Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva for seeking their help.

All the three Lords along with other Gods united their powers to create Goddess Shakti. She and demon Mahishasura fought for nine days, and on the tenth day, Goddess Durga killed him by slaying his head  to conclude the war. These nine days are celebrated as Navratri.

According to another legend, Goddess Uma, consort of Lord Shiva and daughter of King Daksha of Himalayas once came to know the fact that her father had organized Yagna at his palace and intentionally not invited her. Lord Shiva suggested his wife Uma that she should not visit her parental home as an uninvited guest, but all his efforts went in vain. She had great bonding with her parents that made Goddess Uma ignore her husband's wishes.

Finally, when she visited her parental home to be a part of Yagna, she was insulted by her father. He used obscene words for Lord Shiva. Uma got raged by that, she jumped into the fire of Yagna, from where she gained prominence as ‘Sati’. In her next birth, she again got herself married to Lord Shiva and concluded the conflict of her past life by making peace with her parents. It is believed that during the nine-day period of Navratri, she visits her parents.

According to Hindu epic Ramayana, Navratri relates to the Lord Rama. The legend  goes that Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga for nine days, to seek her blessings to provide him with strength and power to slaughter Ravana. He wanted to release his consort Sita from the shackles of a powerful demon king Ravana, who had abducted her by disguised himself as... Read More

Guidelines for keeping fast (Vrat, Upwas) on Navratri festival (Tyohar, Utsav) 2015

  • First of all, clean your house and temple in your home. Try to attire the deity of Durga in new clothes and red stoal(chunri). Thereafter, offer the items of makeup (Srigar) that include bindi (a red colored mark applied on the forehead), bangles, sindoor, Kohl (Kajal), anklets and other beauty items.

  • During Navratri one must abstain from onion and garlic so try to finish the stockpile of these items before the onset of Navratri

  • Loads of Durga devotees grow barley seeds in the earthen pot that is known as khetri. For this they have to collect sand & soil from an auspicious or clean place & put in a pot. Get the barley seeds, wash & clean them for removing any insects or impurities and soak them in water for 15-30 minutes. Put these barley seeds on the top of soil & sand. Make a thin layer of sand& soil on the top of barley seeds, so as to cover it. Remember, don’t put too much soil & sand otherwise barley will not grow and put just enough water to soak the barley. After that tie the red color string (mauli) around the pot. Keep one pot filled with water and cover it with banana leaves and the coconut.

  • Many devotees keep fast for all nine days. If some people find difficult to keep fast for nine days, then there is an option of keeping fast for the first and last day of the Navratri or the first two days or the last two days.

  • Devotees light the earthen or brass oil lamp that remains lighted up for nine days.

  • Each day they devotees take a bath and wear clean clothes. Read Durga Saptasati, recite Mantras & sing Bhajans. After that, read Durga Chalisa. Conclude daily prayers with Durga Arti. Each day Devotees observe the progress of Khetri. There is a believe that longer it grows in height, the better it is for your family’s fortune and well being. At the end, offer fruits, dry fruits, sweets and charanmrit to Durga as a Bhog that is distributed to the all the family members.

The nine fast is concluded either on eight days or the ninth day by inviting nine young girls (minimum two) that have not attained the puberty and worship them. First clean their feet and then put Tilak on their forehead and tie mauli on their wrist. After that, offer them... Read More
